Maybe it's just that I've been through this rodeo three previous times, but things seemed a bit more tame than I remember at Harbour Town Golf Links today. Reporter Sam McDowell and I went out and walked most of the back nine looking for standing water this afternoon, and we found surprisingly little water and surprisingly few people.
Yeah, ticket sales are down this year because of the slumping economy, but it was pretty quiet on the links. We came across a pretty good sized gallery following "Boy Wonder" Rory McIlroy, and an even bigger crowd following a group that included two-time defending champ Boo Weekley and Beaufort native Mark Anderson, the reigning Players Amateur champion, but many of the players made their way around the course with little or no fanfare.
But the worst of the weather seems to be out of the way for the week, and tournament officials said they're still selling tickets at a brisk clip, so I hope and plan to see bigger galleries for Wednesday's pro-am and all four tournament rounds.
If you want a little sneak preview of what we'll have in tomorrow's paper and here online, you can look forward to a story on new course superintendent Jon Wright, who is being challenged to keep the course in great shape during his first Heritage as the head super, thanks to that big rain storm Monday evening, a story on the various grasses of Harbour Town, a feature on Steve Flesch, who has his sights set on being the first left-hander to win at Harbour Town, and new installments of Mark Anderson's and Patsy Weekley's diaries.
As the news from the golf course picks up in the coming days, we'll have more updates here on the blogs, so be sure to stay tuned and bookmark those browsers.
