  • Even in Sea Pines? Well, if that's the case, the Hampton County Guardian knows just where you can find your very own brand new, custom-built Outhouse.

Editor Michael M. DeWitt Jr. has the tongue-in-cheek story about the business in the Lowcountry's own Varnville, home of the late and lamented Varnville Pool, that builds, sells and delivers Outhouses.

He even shares a good story from the Outhouse maker, Jimmy Butler, owner of Jimmy Butler Auto Sales/Storage Plus at 907 Carolina Ave. in Varnville:

    Quote:
Butler has nostalgic memories of his own and laughs when he tells the story of two relatives who, as naughty youngsters, decided to try and smoke some pine straw from a pipe while hiding in the privy and accidentally burned Pa-Pa's outhouse to the ground.

At least it didn't explode and launch them to the MOON.

Thanks to the Outhouse Preservation Society for the vintage postcards. Don't miss this story about "The Specialist" from its Outhouse Wall of Fame.

I guess it's getting harder to preserve this bit of our not-so-distant past. We never had an outhouse in my upbringing, but I sure did use a few of them in rural Georgia.
